Frequently Asked Questions

Chicago area programs run $3,000 to $6,000, and Alpha prices in the lower half. Class B training often costs less than Class A. Your schedule and any endorsements affect the total. School bus work needs the S endorsement, which is priced separately. Every fee is disclosed before instruction begins. Call (630) 628-1111 for current Class B pricing.

It licenses you to drive single vehicles rated above 26,001 pounds. Delivery trucks, dump trucks, garbage trucks, and buses all qualify. You can tow a trailer under 10,000 pounds with it. Anything heavier behind you requires Class A. Passenger and school bus work needs an added endorsement. Alpha trains you for the license and the endorsement together.

Weight behind the vehicle is the dividing line. Class B covers heavy single units towing under 10,000 pounds. Class A adds combinations towing more than that, including tractor trailers. Class A pays more and travels farther. Class B usually means local routes and nights at home. Many drivers start with B and upgrade later.

Most students finish in four weeks. The standard program covers 160 hours total. Classroom instruction accounts for 100 of those. Behind the wheel work covers the other 60. Longer six and eight week tracks are available if you need them. Federal law requires holding your learner’s permit for 14 days before testing.

Not entirely. The federal ELDT theory portion can be completed online through a registered provider. The driving portion cannot. You have to log range and road hours in person with an instructor. Your skills test is in person as well. Alpha delivers both parts, so nothing gets left half finished. Call (630) 628-1111.

Class B drivers in this market earn roughly $43,000 to $55,000. That range comes from Chicago wage data for 2026. Route type and employer both move the figure. Municipal and transit positions often add benefits and pensions. Adding a passenger or school bus endorsement widens your options. Class A drivers earn more, and upgrading later stays open.
